I’m going to share a few memories I have of Ralston that really stuck out for me.

So, I first met Ralston when we were both running backs for the freshman football team. Ralston was the fastest kid on the team, and we would run all of our pitch plays to him. The way a pitch play typically works is that the quarterback tosses the ball backwards to the runningback, who then runs just outside the defensive lineman before turning downfield, looking for a hole in the defense to run through. This was not the case with Ralson. After catching the pitch pass, he would make a straight beeline for the sideline, and only once he got there, would he start running downfield. He knew he could beat anyone in a footrace; his goal was to maximize the amount of running involved in each play so that he could outwork everyone else. He didn’t fuss around with jukes or fancy footwork; instead, he relied on his conditioning and determination. I would say that most of the time, it worked.

Ralston was like a brother to me. We grew up together at Havens, middle school, high school, Mexico trips, Euro trips, OBC Rams tournaments, high school dances, Mandarin videos, Fridays at Kyle Lee’s, getting into trouble, late nights studying, college pressure, off to college, learning about ourselves, questioning society and what constituted the good life, exploring differences between east and west, and many more things.

I’ve known Ralston for nearly my entire life, and it’s been amazing seeing him grow from a kid with boundless energy to a man with even more energy but directed at positive change for himself and the people around him.

We shared a lot of great moments together, and our group of friends was a bunch of very oddly shaped peas in a pod. All with differing personalities, interests, and goals, but when we came together it always felt like time never passed and we could just chat and laugh the day away.

Dear Ralston,

My first memory of you was actually in competition. I remember comparing how many pages we could write during morning journal time in Ms. Brown’s 2nd grade class. After each session, you’d come up to me and state your number and I’d reply with mine. 10 to 8, 9 to 12, 6 to 7. It was a fierce daily ritual that made us far less focused on the quality of the writing and more concerned with how fast our hands could move on paper.

I’d like to share everyday stories spanning the entirety of our friendship, starting from elementary school to the present day.

One of the few memories I have of Haven’s Elementary is Ralston complimenting me on a good test score in the 3rd grade. Not sure why my brain saved that, but deep down inside I think it’s because I’ve always looked up to my big brother.
